A special election was conducted by all mail ballot in the Templeton Community Services District on August 27, 2019, for the election of a levy of a special tax on real property located within the district to provide 24-hours a day, 7 days a week staffed fire and emergency services.

Of the 4,702 ballots that were mailed out on July 29th, 2,281 were received.  The measure required at least a 2/3 majority of the voters voting to pass.  The County Clerk-Recorder’s office tallied the votes and the results showed 1,766 (77.49%) of the voters voted in favor and 513 (22.51%) voted against.  The rate of tax to be levied is $180 per parcel located in the Templeton Community Services District.  The tax will also be subject to annual CPI adjustments capped at 2%.

The passage of this measure will now provide essential local fire and emergency medical services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as opposed to the previous 9 hours a day.

Per the Templeton Community Services District’s resolution, “Engine 30’s primary response area is over 60 square miles and one of the busiest Engines in San Luis Obispo County.  If simultaneous incidents were to occur there would be longer 911 response times for a fire or medical emergency in Templeton.  In the last 2 years, Cal Fire (Engine 30) could not respond to 13.9% of Templeton’s 911 emergency calls because they were already committed to another incident.”
