June 2023 County Labor Market Information

Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County remained the same in May 2023.

The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (May 2023) shows an increase in the civilian labor force, an increase in civilian employment, and no change in civilian unemployment.

 

Unemployment

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 3.0% in May 2023, which is the same rate reported in April 2023. SLO County ranks as the 2nd lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California is 4.5% and 3.4% in the nation during the same period.

 

Month-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the most job growth in this reporting period, adding 600 jobs.  The Mining, Logging, and Construction, Private Education and Health Services, Other Services, and Government industries each added 100 jobs during the month of May.

The Manufacturing, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Information, Financial Activities, and Professional and Business Services industries all had no change during this reporting period.

Total Farm added 600 jobs during the month of May.

In the May reporting period, San Luis Obispo County employers experienced a gain of 1600 jobs overall.

 

Year-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the largest year-over change, gaining 1,100 jobs. The Government industry gained 1000 jobs over the past year. Trade, Transportation, and Utilities experienced a year-over gain of 700 jobs. The Private Education and Health Services industry gained 500 jobs since this time in 2022.  The Manufacturing industry experienced a year-over gain of 300 jobs.

No year-over changes were reported in the Mining, Logging, and Construction and Information industries.

The Professional and Business Services, Financial Activities and Other Services industries experienced job losses this past year, each losing 100 jobs.

Total Farm experienced a year-over gain of 300 jobs.

Overall, employers in San Luis Obispo County gained 3,300 jobs over the past year.
