What is the process?

Submit a Public Records Request

Submit your request in writing to Central Services one of (3) three ways below:

Via US Mail:       Mail completed form to 1087 Santa Rosa St, San Luis Obispo, CA 93408
Via Fax:              Fax completed form to (805) 781-1102
In Person:          Submit completed form to front counter staff

You may use the form provided in the Reference section of this page. This assists Central Services staff in identifying records or data you are requesting. If Central Services does not maintain your requested records, this form will be forwarded to the correct department, to the extent known.

Receive Response to your Public Records Act Request

A response will be sent to you within (10) ten business days of receipt of your request by Central Services. In some instances, Central Services may require up to an additional (14) fourteen days to respond as authorized by the Public Records Act.

Who is eligible?

Any person has the right under the state Public Records Act and the California Constitution to access public information maintained by local and state government agencies.

Is there a charge for this service?

A fee may be assessed based on the volume of documents and difficulty of acquisition of the requested information. All payments are due at the time record reproduction is provided.

When and where is this service offered?

This service is available throughout the year during regular business hours except during scheduled holidays.

The California Public Records Act (Statutes of 1968, Chapter 1473; currently codified as California Government Code §§ 6250 through 6276.48) was a law passed by the California State Legislature and signed by the Governor in 1968 requiring inspection and/or disclosure of governmental records to the public upon request, unless exempted by law.

A response will be provided within 10 business days of the receipt of your request. In some instances, Central Services may require up to an additional 14 days to respond, as authorized by the Act.

Public records are open to inspection at all times during normal business hours.
