Shots for School
Parents must show proof of their child's immunizations prior to school admission. The Public Health Department offers a variety of vaccines, including those required by California schools.
What is the process?
Determine which vaccinations you need
Students Admitted at Ages 4-6 years Need These Immunizations:

Diphtheria,Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, or DT) —5 doses

Polio (OPV or IPV)—4 doses

Hepatitis B—3 doses
-
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)—2 doses

Varicella (Chickenpox)—1 dose
Students Admitted at Ages 7-17 Years Need These Immunizations:

Diphtheria,Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTaP, DTP, DT, Tdap, or Td)—4 doses
-
Polio (OPV or IPV)—4 doses
-
Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)—1 dose (2 doses required at 7th grade)

Varicella (chickenpox) —1 dose (ages 13-17 years need 2 doses)
-
Tetanus, Diphtheria,and Pertussis (Tdap) —1 dose on or after the 7th birthday
CDC also recommends COVID-19 vaccines for everyone age 5 and older.

Who is eligible?
California schools require immunization records for new K-12 students and all students advancing to 7th grade. Shots are available for MediCal-eligible or uninsured children at the Public Health Department. If you are unsure about whether you qualify, please call (805) 781-5500. Children with private insurance are encouraged to see their pediatrician or pharmacist. If you are unable to access the services you need from these providers, please reach out to us.
Is there a charge for this service?
All are welcome regardless of health insurance coverage or ability to pay. The Public Health Department offers a sliding fee discount program.
The total cost for your visit is the vaccine fee plus the office visit fee. Some vaccinations require multiple doses. See a full list of vaccine fees.
You may be eligible for no-cost services with Medi-Cal, CenCal, Medicare, or the Merck Vaccine Patient Assistance Program.
Payment is due at time of visit. We accept cash, check, debit/credit cards (except American Express), Medicare, Medi-Cal, and many private health insurance plans including Aetna, Blue Shield (PPO), Tricare, United Healthcare, and Blue Cross (HMO, Prudent Buyer, Select PPO). Fees are subject to change as our cost for vaccine can change at any time.
When and where is this service offered?
This service is available throughout the year during regular business hours except during scheduled holidays.

Come Prepared
- Bring documentation showing your age (driver’s license, state ID, school ID, doctor’s note, passport, etc.)
- Please wear short sleeves or other clothing that makes it easy to access your upper arm.
