Adult Prosecutions
The San Luis Obispo District Attorney’s Office prosecutes adults who commit misdemeanor and felony crimes in San Luis Obispo County. The prosecution process starts when a law enforcement agency submits a case to the District Attorney’s Office. A Deputy District Attorney assigned to review submitted cases will determine if sufficient evidence exists to file criminal charges, and if so, what charges to file. After the case is filed, it is assigned to another Deputy District Attorney who will handle the case in court. When a criminal case has a victim, the Deputy District Attorney works closely with the District Attorney Victim Witness Assistance Center.
Specialized types of cases, such as Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault offenses, are assigned to seasoned prosecutors who are assigned to handle only these categories of cases.
