NaloxBox SLO County
In an effort to increase access to harm reduction services and increase naloxone availability and distribution sites, the SLO Opioid Safety Coalition is installing NaloxBoxes at easily accessible locations throughout San Luis Obispo County. These NaloxBoxes will act as emergency access for the public to use in case of emergency.
About the Project
NaloxBoxes are self-contained boxes that house materials needed to respond to an opioid emergency: Narcan, CPR face shield, instructions for use. NaloxBoxes function much like an AED, but for opioid emergencies instead of heart emergencies.
NaloxBoxes will help provide immediate emergency supplies for the public to use in case of an opioid emergency. Due to the emerging presence of fentanyl in the local drug supply, SLO County's overdose deaths tripled from 2017-2021. Opioid overdose happens as a process – breathing slows down before it stops. For some opioids, this process can occur minutes to hours after use; fentanyl overdoses can occur seconds to minutes after use. The sooner the individual receives naloxone, the better the chances for survival.
This resource will provide ready access to the life-saving medication, Narcan (nasal spray version of naloxone), while EMS is en route to the emergency.
The NaloxBox project was funded (in part) by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), supported by Grant Number NU17CE925000 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), supported by Grant Number 18-95414 from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the CDC, the Department of Health and Human Services, the CDPH, the County of San Luis Obispo or the SLO Opioid Safety Coalition.
