Assistance Animal Identification Tags
Animal Services issues Assistance Animal Identification Tags for animals which meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) definition of an assistance animal. To qualify for the issuance of a tag, an animal must be individually trained to perform a specific task or specific work function for a person with a disability.
For dogs that qualify, this tag also serves as their license tag. Animals that do not meet the definition of an assistance animal may still qualify as therapy animals and be entitled to certain accommodations. However, there is no specific tag or identification issued for these animals.
Who is eligible?
Assistance Animal Identification Tags are available to any disabled County resident using a qualified assistance animal to aid in the accommodation or mitigation of their disability.
When and where is this service offered?
Applications for an Assistance Animal Identification Tag can be obtained in one of the following ways:
- In Person by visiting the Animal Services office located at 865 Oklahoma Ave. in San Luis Obispo,
- Over the Phone by calling Animal Services at 805-781-4400, or
- Through Email by contacting Animal Services at [email protected]. (Please include your mailing address in your request).
(Please note: Only original applications provided by Animal Services will be reviewed. Printed or photocopied applications will not be accepted).
