Multiple Animal Permits
Residents of San Luis Obispo County are limited in the number of animals in which they can keep. While there is some variability between cities, this is generally no more than three (3) dogs and three (3) cats for each residential home. Individuals may seek an exemption to this limitation by requesting a Multiple Animal Permit from Animal Services. Multiple animal permit applications may be obtained by contacting Animal Services directly.
What is the process?
Obtain a Multiple Animal Permit Application
You may obtain a permit by downloading the Multiple Animal Use Permit or by picking it up in person at the Animal Services Office.
Submit Completed Application
Complete the application, listing all animals residing at the location for more than 30 days within a calendar year (days do not have to be consecutive). All dogs residing in the home must have a current and valid license. Submit the completed application along with payment to our office or mail it to:
San Luis County Animal Services

Submit an Extension Letter
The multiple animal permit allows for up to six (6) animals at a single residence. If you are requesting a further extension of more than six (6) animals, you must submit an extension letter along with the application. The extension letter needs to have the names, breeds, description and alteration (whether they have been spayed or neutered) status of all animals to be housed, along with a statement of why you are requesting to exceed the limitations of the multiple animal permit.
Site Check
Once your application has been received, a site check will be conducted at random between the hours of 9am-4pm Monday through Saturday. Once the inspection is completed and the property approved, you will receive your permit certificate in the mail.
Renew Permit
Permits must be renewed annually and expire on 12/31 of the current year. Renewal forms are sent out in November of the current year for existing permit holders. If you are planning to renew your permit, the renewal form and payment must be postmarked by 12/31 to avoid a late fee. The late fee schedule is as follows:
1 to 30 days past due = 25% of permit price
31 to 60 days past due = 50% of permit price
61 to 90 days past due = 75% of permit price
Over 90 days past due = 100% of permit price
* If you choose not to renew your permit, please return the renewal form with a brief description of why you are not renewing, or contact the permit clerk at (805) 781-4400 or [email protected] - please be sure to include all necessary information.
