South Bay Bridge Replacement Project, Los Osos
The project proposes replacing the existing bridge on South Bay Boulevard near Los Osos with a new concrete box girder bridge.
The South Bay Boulevard Bridge over Los Osos Creek is the primary link between Los Osos and Morro Bay and is a principal Diablo Canyon Power Plant evacuation route. The bridge has been identified as seismically deficient and subject to liquefaction-related collapse during a sizable earthquake. In addition to seismic concerns, some of the existing concrete piles have deteriorated over time. Replacement of the bridge, rather than seismic retrofit and pile repair, is the most cost-effective alternative. The new bridge will be constructed adjacent to the existing bridge which will remain in place during construction. Once the new bridge is complete, the existing bridge will be removed, and the area restored to its natural habitat. The bridge is eligible for funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) Highway Bridge Program (HBP).
Construction will last two years and is anticipated to start the summer of 2025.
