Extended Foster Care (EFC) through California Assembly Bill 12 (AB12)

What is the process?

Contact Your Social Worker or Probation Officer

Contact your social worker or probation officer to ask any questions you have and/or let them know you would like to participate in AB12.

Court Procedure

Your social worker or probation officer will complete the Court documentation on your behalf, which the Court will consider at the Hearing closest to prior to your 18th birthday.

Court Determination

The Court will consider the request and make a determination.  Your social worker and probation officer will work with you to support your continued eligibility, which the Court will review at each Hearing or upon request of your social worker or probation officer.

Complete Documentation

Your social worker or probation officer will meet with you to complete the necessary documentation to support your request, included a Mutual Agreement for Extended Foster Care (SOC162) and a Transitional Independent Living Plan and Agreement (TILP).  You must agree to meet the eligibility criteria (see below).

Determine if you are eligible to participate in Extended Foster Care (EFC) through California Assembly Bill 12 (AB12).  See below for eligibility criteria.

Who is eligible?

Eligible foster and probation youth (see below for eligibility requirements) may use this service.

When and where is this service offered?

This service is offered to qualifying foster youth who are in foster care on their 18th birthday and who agree to remain in care and meet eligibility criteria.  A youth participating in EFC/AB12 through San Luis Obispo County may move anywhere in the United States and continue to receive support until the age of 21, so long as they continue to meet eligibility requirements.

Participating in EFC/AB12 offers eligible youth the opportunity to receive services and support while gaining independence, preparing youth for a successful transition into adulthood and self-sufficiency.   

To determine if you are eligible to participate in EFC/AB12, please contact your assigned social worker or probation officer. If you do not know who your social worker or probation officer is, or if you have already exited foster care and would like to talk to someone about re-entering, please call our intake hotline at (805) 781-5437.
