Several outreach and community events are scheduled to raise awareness during January's "2018 National Slavery and Human Trafficking Awareness Month"
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA, January 8, 2018 – The San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office is asking the residents of San Luis Obispo County to take a stand against Slavery and Human Trafficking in January, during National Human Trafficking Awareness Month.
The FBI has identified California as one of the primary transit and destination states for human trafficking victims. San Luis Obispo County is a natural corridor for human trafficking activities between Los Angeles and San Francisco. As of January 2015, San Luis Obispo County established an Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force, comprised of various County departments, federal, and state law enforcement agencies, and community based organizations.
Human Trafficking is a crime that involves the exploitation of a person for the purpose of compelled labor or a commercial sex act through the use of force, fraud, or coercion. Human traffickers target all populations around the world and in our own neighborhoods. Runaway and homeless youth, native individuals, domestic violence victims, and the LGBTQ population are particularly vulnerable to human trafficking.
