Prop 36 Anti-Theft Task Force
On November 5, 2024, California Voters overwhelmingly passed the Homelessness, Drug Addiction and Theft Reduction Act of 2024 (Proposition 36). A major component of this law was the creation of new laws / tools for law enforcement to protect our communities from the ever compounding problems of repeat theft from our businesses in San Luis Obispo County.
- AGGREGATED VALUE: Thefts of less than $950 can be aggregated together to make a FELONY.
- REPEAT THEFT OFFENSES: Theft of less than $950 by a person with TWO or more misdemeanor theft convictions is a FELONY.
Law Enforcement has joined together to ensure that San Luis Obispo County is fully protected under this new law. Here's where your business can join our effort:
(1) Download this window sign and post in your front window to notify anyone entering your business that your business is protected by San Luis Obispo County's Anti-Theft Law Enforcement Task Force.
(2) Contact your local law enforcement agency (Sheriff's Office or Police Department) and tell them that you want to fully cooperate with stamping out theft from your business and our community by reporting theft crimes and when necessary testifying in court.
(3) Call 9-1-1 whenever your store employees see a theft crime occurring.
(4) Collect photo and video surveillance evidence and be prepared to provide it to Law Enforcement professionals when they arrive. (Do not wait until later.) We need this important evidence to be collected immediately so we can make the arrest and file a criminal case in court.
If you have questions or ideas for how we can better serve your business, you may contact the District Attorney's Office at (805) 781-5800 or send us an email at: [email protected].
