Licensing and Billing
Dog Licensing
Local municipal and county codes require all dogs over the age of 4 months to be licensed with Animal Services. Even if your dog is licensed elsewhere, it must still be licensed here if it will be spending more than 30 days a year in San Luis Obispo County.
In addition to complying with the legal requirements, licensing your dog provides other benefits to you, your pet, and our community.
- Having a current license on your dog will help us reunite them with you more quickly should they ever become lost or injured.
- Maintaining a current license helps dog owners avoid costly fines and fees.
- If your dog is ever picked up by an animal control officer, the first impound fee is waive if they are wearing a current license tag.
- Fees generated through animal licensing help us provide shelter, food, and veterinary care for homeless, unwanted, and abused animals while also supporting our efforts to assist the community with animal related safety and nuisance problems.
Discounted fees are offered for spayed or neutered dogs, for senior citizens, and for multi-year contracts. For a listing of licensing fees, please refer to the Dog Licensing section of our Services Offered page.
