Shelter Services & Adoptable Animals
Animal Services operates the only open-intake animal shelter in the County of San Luis Obispo. As an open-intake shelter, we are required to take in every domestic, household animal which comes through our doors. We do not turn away any animal because our shelter is full, nor do we turn away animals based on their age or breed.
Each year, thousands of lost and owner surrendered animals make their way through the shelter. Most of these are healthy, well-tempered pets looking to get back home, or perhaps looking for a new family. Our staff and volunteers also work hard to provide care for sick or injured animals found without an owner and to provide training and socialization for some of those shelter animals who may need a bit of help before finding a ‘forever home.’
While cats and dogs comprise the large majority of animals coming through the shelter, we regularly house a wide variety of other animals, ranging from rabbits, chickens, and Guinea pigs to parrots, pythons, and horses. For a look at what’s in the shelter right now, check out the following links.
