San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Annual Christmas Bicycle Donations

... now in its 35th year!

Since 1989, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office has been giving away bicycles during the holiday season. And in that spirit of giving, we are currently seeking donations for our Christmas Bicycle Giveaway. This program was created to promote the holiday spirit by giving away refurbished bicycles and new helmets to children in need in San Luis Obispo County. Due to the generosity of those in our community, the program has continued to be a big success.

The Sheriff’s Office Honor Farm is the assembly point for bicycles that are donated and in need of repair. Inmates who are housed at the Honor Farm make the repairs. The program instills in the inmates a positive work ethic, self-respect, and a sense of worth to the community.

We are seeking the public's help by asking for new bicycles, new helmets, or monetary donations for replacement parts. We will be accepting adult bicycles, but we prefer children’s bicycles since they are in high demand. If you know a child (up to 15 years of age) in need of a bicycle, please visit the website at slosheriff.org and click on Community Resources at the top of our homepage and then Forms and Applications on the drop-down menu, or click HERE.

All applications are due by: Thursday, November 21st, 2024. This year's Christmas Bicycle Giveaway will take place on Thursday, December 12th, 2024, at 9:00 AM.

The Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Sheriff's Advisory Foundation, Bike SLO County (Bike Kitchen), The SLO Bike Club, The Sandlot Group of San Luis Obispo, San Luis Garbage, Rita's Rainbows and County of SLO Health Agency for their continued support and donations to the Sheriff's Bike Program.

Individuals and businesses who wish to donate children’s bicycles or new helmets in their original packaging can bring them to any of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol stations or to the Sheriff’s Honor Farm located on Highway 1.

If you would like to make a monetary contribution for the purchase of bikes, parts or helmets, please send a check to:

Construction of the Dover Canyon Road Bridge Replacement ProjectImage of a map showing the Dover Canyon Road Bridge

On Monday, June 10, 2024, the County of San Luis Obispo will begin work to replace the bridge on Dover Canyon Road over Jack Creek. The bridge is located between Paso Robles and Cambria, 1.3 miles southwest of Vineyard Drive.  The public can expect to reduce speeds and experience delays of up to 10 minutes through the construction zone, which is expected to last until November.

The first part of the project will involve constructing a temporary detour bridge adjacent to the existing bridge, which will take approximately one month. Once the detour bridge is in place, traffic will be diverted around the existing bridge through a 15-mph detour. After the existing bridge is demolished, the new bridge will be constructed in its place. Traffic will be re-routed onto the new bridge and the temporary bridge will be removed in the fall of 2024.

This project will replace a bridge that has reached the end of its useful life and improve roadway safety by increasing the bridge to two lanes and installing modern guardrails.

Souza Construction has been awarded the contract for approximately $2.25M to perform the work.  The project is funded by the Federal Highway Administration via grant funding administered by Caltrans and local funds.
