A harmless compound, MIB, in surface waters is causing a stink.
Residents in the cities of Pismo Beach, Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach, Oceano, Avila Beach, and Shell Beach may notice a musty taste or odor in their tap water over the next week, but the naturally occurring compound does not pose any health concern.
MIB can be a common occurrence during the summer months and its levels are slightly elevated in the water, which is what is causing the odor and taste. Staff is working to reduce MIB levels and expects the musty taste and smell to be reduced within a week.
