California Victim Compensation Board (CalVCB)
Since 1989, the Victim Witness Assistance Center has contracted with CalVCB to provide local claim verification services, which means victims and local service providers receive streamlined and expedited assistance in the processing of state victim compensation claims.

Benefits may include:
- Medical/dental expenses
- Mental health counseling
- Lost wages/income loss
- Support loss to eligible family members
- Funeral/burial expenses
- Job retraining (if applicable)
- Residential security devices or systems
- Home/vehicle modifications for disabled victims
Losses that are not covered:
- Personal property losses, including cash
- Pain and suffering
Victim Eligibility
The following are some conditions that need to be met to qualify:
- Crime occurred in California or to a California resident;
- Victim had no involvement or participation in the crime;
- Victim cooperated with law enforcement;
- Victim cooperated with Claims Board; and
- Victim applied for compensation within a year from the date of the crime or within 90 days of incurring crime-related out-of-pocket expenses for the first time since the crime occurred.
Funding – No taxpayer dollars used – program funded by:
- Offenders
- Restitution fines and orders
- Federal Victims of Crime Act matching funds
- Portion of State penalty assessments
