Purpose Establish a procedure for employee participation in Department approved public outreach events.

Participation in Approved Community Outreach Events

  1. Pre-approved community outreach events include the San Luis Obispo County Peace Officer Memorial, Farmer’s Market Law Enforcement Night, Cop’s n’ Kids Day and Sheriff’s Family Day
  2. Employees shall be compensated for their participation in Department approved public outreach events and are eligible for differential pay for events that occur on Saturdays and Sundays.
  3. Prior to participation, employees shall obtain supervisor approval consistent with the Flex Schedule Policy.
  4. Participation shall be within an employee’s 40-hour work week unless authorized in advance for OT/comp time pay.
  5. Other public outreach events not listed in section 1 and 2, include but are not limited to presentations to high school and college classes, career fairs, community organizations, etc.  Such events shall require approval by the respective Chief Deputy on a case-by-case basis, with notification to the Assistant Chief Probation Officer. 

Participation in Fundraisers

Fundraisers are not recognized as public outreach events.  Employee participation is considered voluntary and not entitled to compensation.
