Subject 5.17 Hiring Unpaid Interns
Purpose This serves as a guide for hiring unpaid interns.

After the intern candidate completes an application, has interviewed with an SDPO, and has CDPO approval: SDPO emails DPT to request for intern to proceed to backgrounds.

DPT emails backgrounds to notify, with application attached.

DPT is given signed background authorization upon background completion.

DPT emails the intern required paperwork to complete and return.

DPT sends an email to the SDPO to notify the intern is clear to start and has completed required paperwork. DPT requests the start date for the intern from the SDPO at this time.

Email the name, start date, who the intern will be working with, telephone number, assignment, and who the IT access will mirror to the Probation DAS/Automation, Executive Assistant to the Chief, PR_PSU (Professional Standards Unit), appropriate Chief Deputy, and SDPO/Supervisor. CC to: Chief, Assistant Chief, CDPO over Support Services Division, SAC II, and other DPT.

Process the telephone request for phone line swaps, or vacant lines as necessary.

Once the telephone request is complete, Personnel will notify the intern with a copy to their supervisor of anything related to the phone line as needed.

Update the Employee Telephone Log. Update the appropriate building maps. Add/update intern on the Employee Safety Roster. Add intern to the Employee contact info – confidential list.

Email the Professional Standards Unit to request an ID.
