August 2024 County Labor Market Information

Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County saw an increase in July 2024
The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (July 2024) shows an increase in the civilian labor force, an increase in civilian employment, and an increase in civilian unemployment.
 
Unemployment
The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 4.2% in July 2024, which is an increase from the revised June 2024 rate.  SLO County ranks as the 7th lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California was 5.8% and 4.5% in the nation during the same period.
 
Month-over Job Changes
The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the most job growth in the July reporting period, adding 200 jobs. The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Professional and Business Services and the Mining, Logging, and Construction industries each added 100 jobs during the same reporting period
The Private Education and Health Services, Information, Financial Activities, and Other Services industries all saw no changes in job loss or growth during the month of July. 
The Government industry experienced the most job losses in July, losing 1,500 jobs.  The Manufacturing industry reported 100 job losses during the same period. 
Total Farm reported a loss of 300 jobs during the month of July.
During the same reporting period, San Luis Obispo County lost a total of 1,400 jobs.
 
Year-over Job Changes
The Private Education and Health Services industry experienced the largest year-over change, adding 1,300 jobs. The Mining, Logging and Construction industry experienced a year-over gain of 300 jobs. The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, Professional and Business Services, Other Services and the Leisure and Hospitality industries each reported year-over-gain of 200 jobs. 
The Financial Activities industry has had no job losses or gains since this time last year.
The Government industry experienced the most year-over losses with 1,100 jobs reported. The Manufacturing and Information industries also reported a year-over loss of 100 jobs each. 
Total Farm reported losing 300 jobs since last year at this time.
San Luis Obispo County employers reported a year-over gain of 800 jobs.
