Unemployment Rate for San Luis Obispo County saw a decrease in May 2024

The San Luis Obispo County Monthly Employment Report (May 2024) shows an increase in the civilian labor force, an increase in civilian employment, and a decrease in civilian unemployment.

Unemployment

The California Employment Development Department (EDD) reported the unemployment rate was 3.0% in May 2024, which is a decrease from the revised April 2024 rate.  SLO County ranks as the 2nd lowest Unemployment Rate in the state. The unadjusted Unemployment Rate in California was 4.5% and 3.7% in the nation during the same period.

Month-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the most job growth in the May reporting period, adding 400 jobs.

The Government, Other Services, Private Education and Health Services, Trade, Transportation, and Utilities, and Mining, Logging, and Construction industries each added 100 jobs during the same reporting period.

The Information, Manufacturing, Professional and Business Services and Financial Activities industries all saw no changes in job loss or growth during the month of May.

Total Farm reported a gain of 500 jobs during the month of May.

During the same reporting period, San Luis Obispo County gained a total of 1,400 jobs.

Year-over Job Changes

The Leisure and Hospitality industry experienced the largest year-over change, adding 500 jobs. The Professional and Business Services industry experienced a year-over gain of 400 jobs.  The Trade, Transportation, and Utilities industry experienced an increase of 300 jobs over the past year. The Private Education and Health Services industry reported year-over-gain of 200 jobs.  The Mining, Logging, and Construction industry also reported gains this year, adding 100 jobs.  

The Financial Activities industry has had no job losses or gains this past year.

The Government industry lost 1,400 jobs this past year.  The Other Services industry experienced a loss of 200 jobs since this same reporting period in 2023.  The Information and Manufacturing industries each reported losing 100 jobs at the same time last year. 

Total Farm reported losing 100 jobs since last year at this time.

San Luis Obispo County employers reported losing 400 jobs total for the year.
