On the vacant site along Frontage Road in Nipomo, skateboarders have built their own makeshift skate park. The cracked concrete foundation left from the burnt down recreation center provides the base for quarter pipes made of faded plywood, and rails made from scrap metal. This is only place they can skate. Nipomo has no legitimate skate park and anywhere else they go to skate they are asked to leave.
Late last year, San Luis Obispo County Parks and Recreation started a plan to remedy this problem and implement the skate park feature identified in the Nipomo Community Park Master Plan. A skate park design firm was hired to design the skate park along with input from the skaters and community members. The skater community in Nipomo has been engaged and very helpful in the design process. The skate park concept design will be presented at a Community Workshop, on May 31 at 6:00 PM, at the Nipomo Community Services District Board Chambers (148 South Wilson Street in Nipomo).
Once the concept design is completed, the next challenge is to identify the funding for constructing the skate park.
