San Luis Obispo County Parks and Recreation Department has completed the design and is now seeking permits for the planned skate park at Nipomo Community Park.
The Nipomo Community Park Master Plan, adopted by the Board of Supervisors in 2012, includes a future skate park as one of the recreation features desired by the community. In recent years, the citizens of Nipomo elevated the need for a skate park in Nipomo. In 2017, County Parks hired Stantec Consulting Services to design the skatepark, to be located in Nipomo Community Park adjacent to Tefft Street, next to the Nipomo Community Library.
The skate park design incorporates ideas and input from an impressive group of local skaters, who participated in design workshops held at the Nipomo Library. Features include: quarter pipes, banks, ledges, flat bars, a flow bowl, and a skate bowl up to 5 feet deep. Other site amenities include a plaza area for skate boarding, picnic area with barbecue, drinking fountain, and restrooms.
The construction cost estimate is approximately $1.5 million dollars, which will include necessary street access improvements, a parking lot, and pedestrian improvements along Tefft Street. Approximately $600,000 is available for construction. County parks is seeking other funding sources, including potential grant funding, for the remaining needed construction funding.
