Public Workshop on Sustainable Groundwater Management and Planning for the Arroyo Grande Subbasin on December 15, 2020

Author: Dick Tzou

The County of San Luis Obispo and the City of Arroyo Grande are jointly developing a Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) for the sustainable management of the Arroyo Grande Subbasin.

The County received state grant funding to develop a GSP in compliance with the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). A key component in the GSP will include the development of an integrated surface water and groundwater model that will help decision makers better understand the interconnections between the groundwater basin and the Arroyo Grande Creek watershed. The model will support local priorities such as effective operation of Lopez Lake and the further development of the Arroyo Grande Creek Habitat Conservation Plan.

All interested stakeholders and members of the public are encouraged to participate in the workshops beginning in December to learn about and provide input on the development of the Arroyo Grande Subbasin GSP. Below are details about the online Workshop #1: Basin Setting and Visioning.

  • The requirements of the SGMA, the roles of Groundwater Sustainability Agencies (GSAs), and how the GSP supports and integrates with other related initiatives
  • A summary of key takeaways of the basin setting work completed to date, which describes the basin’s geological makeup, potential challenges associated with groundwater management, and anticipated future groundwater use
  • An overview of the integrated computer model to be used as a decision support tool

All interested stakeholders are encouraged to participate and help guide the GSP development process.
