The San Luis Obispo County Department of Public Works celebrated the commissioning of two new 210,000-gallon water storage tanks located west of Hacienda Drive, in Cayucos, on time and below estimated cost.
The $2.2M project was constructed by John Madonna Construction and was funded by County Service Area 10A, and a United States Department of Agriculture loan. The two new tanks replaced a single deteriorating 60-year-old tank and will provide system redundancy to facilitate operations and maintenance, and to meet the California Fire Code for fire flow storage. “I’m so impressed by the way the community came together and supported this project. Folks clearly saw the value of investing in this important water storage facility — and it pays off with improved resiliency and fire protection,” said Bruce Gibson, District 2 Supervisor for the County of San Luis Obispo.
About County Service Area, 10A
Cayucos water is piped from Whale Rock Reservoir to a water treatment plant and then distributed through three separate water service districts. County Service Area 10A (CSA 10A) distributes water to the south end of Cayucos. In addition to redundancy and fire flow, the new tanks provide emergency water storage for three days. And while the average daily usage for CSA 10A is approximately 110,000 gallons, that number spikes on the 4th of July to approximately 325,000 gallons. The average annual water usage in CSA 10A is 132 acre feet or approximately 43 million gallons of water per year.
