The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works will begin construction of the San Juan Creek Pedestrian Bridge on East Centre Street, between 5th Street and Calle Carmelita, in Shandon. Work is scheduled to start on June 1, 2017 and continue to the end of December 2017.
The project includes the installation of a separate bridge approximately 10 feet wide and 305 feet long along the north side of the existing vehicle bridge. Paved pathway, guardrails, and miscellaneous drainage improvements will also be included. This project will improve safety and encourage multimodal use by providing a separate bridge to accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists.
For the safety of the public and workers, occasionally a minimum of one-lane of traffic will be open to the public with approximately 10 minute delays. Motorists are advised to adjust their travel plans and consider alternative routes.
Souza Construction, Inc. of San Luis Obispo has been awarded the contract for $1,023,000 to perform the work. The project is funded from the San Luis Obispo Council of Governments, Regional State Highway Account (RSHA), Project Contributions from Developers and the County Road Fund.
A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 1:00 pm along the west side of Calle Carmelita (just north of East Centre Street).
