The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Public Works will begin construction to rehabilitate the historic steel truss bridge on River Grove Drive over the Estrella River in Whitley Gardens.
Work is scheduled to begin on June 24, 2019 and continue through November. River Grove Drive, in the vicinity of the bridge, will be closed for the duration of the project, beginning the first week of July. Detour signs will be posted to indicate alternate routing. Please see attached map for specific location.
The bridge was built in 1910 and served as the primary route between Paso Robles and the Central Valley before the State Route 46 bridge was constructed in 1955.
The general scope of work for the project is as follows:
- Replace the supporting foundation
- Replace the concrete deck
- Upgrade the structural members to remove the current weight and height restrictions
- Clean and paint the entire structure
Souza Construction, Inc. of San Luis Obispo has been awarded the contract for $2,435,128.50 to perform the work. The project is funded by the Federal Highway Bridge Program and County Road funds.
